Toronto’s free, all-night celebration of contemporary art is scheduled to return on Saturday, October 4, 2008. From sunset to sunrise Toronto will be transformed by artists.
Now entering its third year, this award-winning event will increase in scale and scope in 2008 thanks to a three-year renewed commitment from Scotiabank.
For one sleepless night contemporary art will be accessible to everyone. Hundreds of Toronto museums, galleries, cultural and educational institutions, and neighbourhoods will participate with city-wide projects.
The 2008 edition of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche will feature exhibitions developed by four local and national curators: Gordon Hatt from Kitchener, Ontario and Wayne Baerwaldt from Calgary, Alberta who will curate exhibitions in the city’s downtown core, and Haema Sivanesan and Dave Dyment from Toronto who will use their visions to transform Liberty Village in the city’s west end.
First produced in 2006, Scotiabank Nuit Blanche was so successful it received an Urban Leadership Award and became an annual signature event for the City of Toronto. In its second year, Scotiabank Nuit Blanche saw a 45% increase in projects, a 55%increase in community participation and close to double the audience attendance from the inaugural event. The audience for the 2007 event was estimated at 800,000. Scotiabank Nuit Blanche is produced by Toronto Special Events in collaboration with Toronto’s arts community.
